We’ve all seen the Pinterest fails – well-meaning people who tried really hard to make the picture perfect creations they found on Pinterest, but failed miserably. When you’re planning a Thanksgiving dinner for a large group of family and friends, the last thing you want is for your gossipy cousin to talk about how terrible it was. What you really want is for everyone to have a fabulous time, not to mention have everyone compliment you on how lovely your home looked and how delicious your food tasted.
The reason those Pinterest boards make it look so easy is because those domestic goddesses know that the secret to success lies in organization and execution. Throwing a large dinner party is a job with many moving parts. The key is in your ability to organize your time and energy.
Tips to Create a Lovely Thanksgiving Atmosphere
- Organize. Before invitations go out, you need to sit down and plan your guest list. The amount of guests will dictate what you can comfortably serve and the area you’ll need to use.
- Delegate. Once you know the amount of people and have an idea of your menu, delegate tasks to some of your guests, or hire out some of the food to be catered. Pick a few dishes that you’d like to prepare yourself, but don’t attempt to make the whole meal with no help – you’ll wind up in the kitchen the whole time instead of enjoying the party.
- Rent Tables, Place Settings, Even Decorations. If you have a stash full of fall themed decor, great. But if you don’t, you can easily rent your ambiance for the day. Other considerations for rental might be tablecloths and place settings. It’s nice to have all of the place settings match and most people simply don’t have that many sets of dishes.
- Prepare in Advance. The biggest key to a successful dinner party is to prepare well in advance. Don’t leave anything until the last minute. Dishes should already be prepared and the house should be show ready hours before the party is scheduled. This allows you time to get ready and relax before everyone arrives.
